Matthew J. Bruccoli
Matthew J. Bruccoli was born in the Bronx, New York on August 21, 1931. Bruccoli earned his bachelor’s degree from Yale University and went on to do his graduate work at the University of Virginia where he earned his doctorate in English literature studies in1960. After earning his degrees, Bruccoli taught at the University of Virginia and Ohio State University before joining the University of South Carolina’s English department, where he taught for four decades. Much of Bruccoli’s scholarship focused on F. Scott Fitzgerald, leading him to become recognized as the preeminent expert on Fitzgerald and his works. Bruccoli also studied Ernest Hemingway and Thomas Wolfe.
During his life, Bruccoli, was either the author or editor of more than 100 books on American literature. He and his wife established the Matthew J. & Arlyn Bruccoli Collection of F. Scott Fitzgerald, which includes more than 3,000 books, periodical publications, letters, and screenplays with much of these materials coming from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s daughter. He also established the Joseph M. Bruccoli Great War Collection as a tribute to his father who was a World War I veteran. Both of these collections are housed at the University of South Carolina’s University Libraries. In 2000, Bruccoli and his wife Arlyn published O Lost (University of South Carolina Press), containing the complete text of Thomas Wolfe's original manuscript of the novel first published by Charles Scribner's Sons in its abridged form as Look Homeward, Angel.
In 1971, Bruccoli was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship for Creative Arts (US & Canada) for his Biographies. In 1985, Bruccoli was nominated for the Edgar Award for Best Critical/Biographical Work. In 1999, he received the Thomas Cooper Medal of the University of South Carolina. In 2001, he was inducted into the South Carolina Academy of Authors. He died on June 4, 2008 in Columbia, South Carolina.
