Dorothea Benton Frank
Dorothea Benton Frank was a New York Times best-selling author, public speaker, and non-profit fundraiser. She was born and reared on Sullivan's Island, South Carolina.
In 1983 she married Peter Richard Frank and moved to Montclair, NJ. Their first child, Victoria Hanna Frank, was born in 1985; their son, William Richard Frank, was born in 1988.
Ms. Frank became a volunteer fundraiser, organizing events for various non-profit organizations. Past board service includes the Montclair Art Museum, the Whole Theater Company, The Drumthwacket Foundation, and The NJ Cultural Trust. She has also served on the Board of Trustees of the SC Coastal Conservation League and the Parent’s Council of The College of Charleston. She was a trustee of Bloomfield College (Bloomfield, NJ), the Montclair Film Festival, and the SC Historical Society.
Her first novel, Sullivan's Island (Berkley Publishing, 2000), debuted on the New York Times list at number one. The novel has over one million copies in print and can be found in ten foreign languages. Her subsequent novels - Plantation, Isle of Palms, Shem Creek, Pawleys Island, Full of Grace, Bulls Island, The Christmas Pearl, The Land of Mango Sunsets, Lowcountry Summer, Return to Sullivan's Island, Folly Beach, Porch Lights, The Last Original Wife, The Hurricane Sisters, All the Single Ladies, All Summer Long, Same Beach Next Year, By Invitation Only, and Queen Bee (William Morrow, 2019)- were all New York Times Best Sellers and may be found in various foreign languages. In addition to this impressive best seller list, Ms. Frank and her daughter Victoria Benton Frank published a children's book together titled Teddy Spaghetti.
She is the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from The College of Charleston and a Doctorate of Fine Arts from Bloomfield College. She was inducted into the South Carolina Academy of Authors in 2015. She passed away on September 2, 2019 in New York.
