Benjamin E. Mays
Dr. Benjamin E. Mays (1894-1984) was born in Greenwood County and went on to acquire international reputation as a preacher, educator, civil rights activist, presidential advisor, and author. From 1940 until 1967, he was president of Morehouse College in Atlanta. His autobiography, Born to Rebel, was published in 1971. A Literary Landmark plaque is located at his birthplace in Greenwood.
